Raffia is native to Madagascar and is a vital, renewable resource for local communities. Harvested from the raffia palm, the fibres are collected deep within the island’s tropical regions. Each palm branch contains nearly 100 leaflets, which are carefully and sustainably removed to produce long, continuous fibres. These fibres are then naturally dried before being woven.
Raffia contains a natural resin, giving it a soft, smooth feel while maintaining impressive strength and durability.
With a population of over 28 million, Madagascar’s raffia industry supports more than 2 million people, making it an important source of livelihood across the country.
